How we make our baubles

Curious how we make our baubles here in our West Country pottery?

The beginning of a Cornishware bauble

Step 1: Pouring the Magic

We start by pouring our special Cornish clay into plaster of Paris moulds – each one shaped like the bauble of your dreams! After about 50 minutes (with a little help from some low heat), the clay begins to set. This is where the magic starts to take shape!

Next step: Drying

Step 2: Fresh from the Mould

Once our bauble has set, it’s ready to pop out of the mould and take its first breath of air! It spends the next 24-48 hours in our casting unit drying out, getting ready for its big journey ahead.

Next step: Firing

Step 3: Into the Fire!

Now that it’s all dry, it’s time for its first adventure in the kiln! After a toasty trip, our baubles come out transformed into a creamy-white treasure. But wait—these little beauties are still a blank canvas, ready to find their color!

Next step: Decorating

For christmas 2024, we'll have 6 colours in total!

Step 4: Let the Decorating Begin!

Now, here’s where the fun really begins! We’ve got 6 fresh colours for Christmas this year, and each bauble gets a special, artistic touch. Our talented decorators can paint up to 100 baubles a day, adding layers of colour with expert precision. Once they’re looking festive and fabulous, they’re ready for their second round in the kiln.

Next step: Glazing

Step 5: Shine Time!

After another 24 hours of firing, it’s time to give these baubles their signature Cornishware shine. Off they go on a little conveyor belt ride to our glazing barn, where they’re dipped in a glossy glaze. After drying and setting for a day, they’re ready for their third and final trip to the kiln.

Next step: Quality checking

Step 6: The Finishing Touch

Now looking like true Cornishware baubles, they’re carefully inspected during our rigorous quality check. Once they pass, each bauble is given a beautiful golden hook and tied with a festive red ribbon. All that's left is for them to make their way to the warehouse, ready to be picked, packed, and sent to you—just in time for Christmas! 🎄 And there you have it—a bauble-making journey that’s as magical as the season itself!
